I've observed the above theme in action, and I have a variation on this passage suitable for our modern times with a huge middle class. Resentment of those who've made different choices, gone without to have more later and who've built more. There's an entitlement to the life others built. Our large middle-class limits the chances of the scene in the passage, but now we have people resentful when comparing one's choices with how others choose to live and spend their income.
